Giving up on the American Dream

New cars, nice house, two children, perfect marriage...the American Dream! Y'all we had that and so much more. Now, we want nothing at all to do with that dream.

Our brand new home we had just built on 15 acres!

That was our house. We had found the perfect 15 acres and built the perfect farmhouse. Seriously, we were living the American Dream. My husband had a great job, I was teaching where our daughter attended school, and our son went to the BEST in home daycare ever. Sounds absolutely amazing in every possible way, right? But, see, we weren't happy. My husband and I would work all day just to come home, clean the house, do laundry, cook dinner, and care for the children. No one tells you that you will work 40+ hours every week to pay people you don't even know to live in the banks house. Let's face it, unless you pay cash for a house it isn't yours. So we worked. We did this everyday all day. Which led us to begin to question things.

If this was the American Dream why were so unhappy?

We didn't want to come home from work and upkeep our 15 acres or the 2,000 square foot house. We didn't want to run around cleaning up after our children or seeing them frustrated because they couldn't keep track of their stuff. We just didn't want that life anymore. So we gave it all up.

Yes, you read that right.

We gave up our brand new home, our comfort zone, our life as we knew it.

Moving 900 miles away.

We got out a map, closed our eyes and pointed. No, that's not a typo. We literally closed our eyes and landed on the great state of Texas. We downsized to a 900 square foot apartment and have been able to focus on our goals. It is with pure excitement and joy that I tell you we are getting ready to embark on the tiny home journey! We are so EXCITED! Now, I am sure y'all think we have literally lost our minds but hear me out. Through this journey we will be able to pay off the remaining debt we have (medical bills, go figure!) within months. We will have zero debt. Literally, we will owe nothing to anyone. We will own everything we have and have a beautiful place to live life to the fullest in. Y'all did you hear that? A debt free life that allows us to travel and see the beautiful creations God made. We will not have clutter or an abundance of stuff. We are teaching our children that happiness comes from the Lord not from the love of stuff or amount of stuff you have. Can you imagine the valuable life skill they will be getting from this simple act?! You're thinking I can teach my kids this without confining us all to 300 square feet of space. You totally can! However, we want a simple minimalist life style that allows us freedom to follow God's path for us.

We are becoming full time RV owners with our two kids!

This journey is one full of research, prayer, and hard work! We have set some huge goals and have gazelle intensity! So be on the lookout for my next post about how to pick out the perfect RV for a full time family of four!
